The course equips teachers to effectively support students with intellectual disabilities. Participants will analyse characteristics and support needs, evaluate evidence-based practices, and generate strategies for teaching. Reflective practice and integrating research and assessment data will be emphasised. Through a scenario-based case study, participants will identify specific learning needs and consider individualised education plans, classroom environments and available resources. It utilises various learning approaches, fostering a Community of Inquiry and practical application. The course shows teachers how to create inclusive environments and enable the success of students with intellectual disabilities.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

• Analyse the characteristics and support needs of students with intellectual disabilities in classroom settings.
• Evaluate the characteristics, strengths, and limitations of evidence-based practice related to teaching students with intellectual disabilities.
• Generate and apply evidence-based practices for teaching students with intellectual disabilities.
• Reflect upon the impact of implementing evidence-based educational plans for learners with intellectual disabilities integrating external research and student assessment data.

Dr Tania Leach is an expert in educational leadership at the 精东传媒app of Southern Queensland. Her research focuses on the contemporary challenges of system leaders, and what that this means for how we can better support schools and their leaders to achieve whole of system growth. She has a particular interest in the interconnection between system and school leadership and the skills and knowledges that are needed to successfully lead systems and schools. Tania has 18 years of leadership experience across the schooling and university sector, including Associate Dean - LTSS, Principal Education Advisor and Head of School. Her expertise as a system leader was formally acknowledged in 2017 through the Australian Council of Educational Leadership鈥檚 Queensland Excellence in Leadership Award. She now works with current leaders, policy makers, and international researchers to highlight the important and complex work of educational leadership today.
